Why a Selfie doesn’t cut it in Business & you need a Professional Headshot

Why a selfie won’t do!

As people explore the limits and extraordinary possibilities of selfies every day, it’s time to realise they just won’t do when it comes to representing yourself professionally.

People relate to people and using a professional image will help sell your brand. Why would you want a mediocre picture next to your professional content?

While it’s one thing to simply take a nice or fun photo and put it on your social profile, it’s another thing to have a photo which truly represents who you are and the image you want to convey.

Taking a selfie that encapsulates all the qualities you wish to convey would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. It takes a truly skilled photographer to capture your emotion, passion and accentuate your individualism – all that without even looking at the technical side of a headshot.

Most selfie’s unfortunately tend to fail in at least one of these areas: blurry, poor lighting or an odd background which can be distracting. Not to mention knowing how to work your best angles and expressions.

By utilising the latest techniques in lighting, angles and camera work, along with professional hair and makeup, a professional headshot will clearly stand out amongst all the selfies. Your professional headshot can become one of your greatest marketing tools.

Bradkay Photographix can deliver a unique and professional head shot that you will be proud to associate with your business.

Gold Coast Food Photographer – Banaban Virgin Coconut Oil

Not too many people get through life without eating.  I love to eat.  I love to combine 2 of my favorite things, eating & photography I didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance.  I had shot all the product images for the Nature Pacific Website so when i heard that Brynley was putting together a cookbook I was there. Brynley spent hours & hours preparing the food so that I was able to wander in and shoot away.  We decided to keep the shots as simple as possible without to many props.  She really wanted the food to be the main attraction.  The fantastic thing about these shoots is not only do you get to take some beautiful images but you get to snack on some really delicious food.

Gold Coast Holiday Resorts – Albatross North

The Gold Coast is such a fantastic place to live and work and we sometimes take it for granted.  Working for myself, i don’t take huge amounts of holidays but often I get photograph some wonderful accommodation here on the Gold Coast.  Mermaid Beach is a fantastic place to stay and the one of the best places in the area is The Albatross North Apartments.  Wonderful 2 & 3 bedroom apartments, right on the beach.  There is a roof top area that may become a special dining or wedding reception space.

How to look Good in any Headshot or Photo – Part 2

In Part 1 of this blog I spoke about the chin or the jawline and by jutting it out towards the camera you can make it look like you have a nice tight jawline, even if you don’t.

In this installment i am going to talk about facial expressions.  Most of the comments that i get about my work, people never fail to mention the expressions that i capture.  It’s no accident !  I work hard at eliciting expressions from my clients and in fact my whole system is set up to do just that.  My Headshot shoots are not about the studio or the lights or the white background or even the camera, I think 90% of what i do is about the expressions I can glean from my clients during the sessions.

I have a routine that I follow and it generally follows the same pattern but it all comes back to being able to communicate with my clients about their subjects of interest.  I was in the hospitality Industry for approximately 20 years so communicating with people is something that i do pretty well.

My goal in every session that i do is to make the client relax to a point that they are not thinking about the fact that they are having their photograph taken.  In other words, the poses, the jawline, the look & the facial expression all become natural.  If you look through my portfolio none of my clients have   deer in the headlights expressions, out to lunch or even forced or faked smiles on their faces.  The secret is getting them to relax & I do this with the atmosphere that I create in the studio.  Is it easy, sometimes yes & sometimes no.  Very rare is the person that is immediately comfortable in front of a camera you can even go and look at some old pictures of someone like Brad Pitt and see some pretty out to lunch type of expressions from his early days.

Photography is very visual and that probably sounds a very stupid thing to say but people forget( I think it has to do with the digital age) about the visual message they are sending. If you bring up your own profile Image, whether its your linked in profile picture or Facebook profile, website profile, whatever, and really think about what your image is saying to people when they look at your profile Image.  Are you happy that you are sending the right message ?

The early part of my sessions are spent working out what type of look works best for your particular industry.  What do i mean by that ?  for example, if you were scrolling through websites looking for a solicitor or an accountant and their website looked really professional and clean but then you clicked on their profile image and in the image the solicitor was laughing, or looked angry, would you be inspired to do business with this person ?  As a solicitor, I think you need to have just the right expression on your face, not too happy or people might think you might take things seriously enough, not to angry because they might think you are not warm enough.  You need to be able to say approachable, warm, friendly but also professional, all with the one look.  This is what my work is based around.

I love people that tell me that they never look good in photos.  They never look good in photos because they have never been told how to stand, which angles or expressions suit their face, they have never been coached properly. Do you know what expression suits your face, your profession ?

What does your profile Image say about you and your business ?

How to look good In a Headshot or any Photo – Chapter 1

Like all Gold Coast Photographers I am absolutely passionate about what I do and look to always be providing the best guidance and advice to my clients.  The reason i have a growing client base for my Headshots is that its obvious that I am passionate about my clients and helping them look their best in their Headshots & profile Images.

In this post I am going to tell you about how to look good in not only your Headshot shoot but in any photos that you happen to be in.  Actors, Actresses & Rock Stars know these secrets because they are always getting photographed by the best photographers in the business.  Do you ever see them on the Red Carpet, they always look good in their photos.  Its not the lighting, as the photographers are usually behind a rope with a little pop up flash on top of the camera.  If you look closely, they will angle their chin and they will change their facial expression.

Lets start with the Chin or the jaw.  No one likes to have more than one chin, so what we have to show is a nice strong jaw line, we need to create some tightening of the skin around the jaw.  How do we do this ?  We stretch our chin out towards the camera away from our neck.  Once we have stretched it out, we then drop our chin down without decreasing the distance of our chin from our necks.  Now, if the camera / photographer is at your eye level it will give the illusion that you have a nice tight jaw line and just one chin.  It will feel weird but, if you persevere through that, you will discover that your chin & jaw line will look great.

In my next blog I will talk about facial expressions.

Wedding Preparation for the bride

Preparing for a wedding for a bride is easy to say but, there are a lot of things to do. You must think about yourself first & foremost.

On your special day, you will want your nails, your hair to look fabulous. You will be surrounded by your family, most of your friends and of course your professional wedding photographer.  Most cameras will take photos of you and your husband and they will be pointed from all different angles.

You will need to pay attention to not only how your front side looks but how you look from the back as well !  You want to be careful about parts of your body that are exposed by your dress. For example, if  you are going to wear a wedding dress with bare arms you don’t want  “chicken wings”.
You want to look healthy and beautiful in your wedding dress.  You will be busy preparing for your wedding day but take the time for some exercise. This is not only to “shape up” but to also release stress and relax you.
As little as  30 minute a day for walking or stretching.  If you can go to a gym, swimming or running, any exercise will help you. It is also fantastic  to have a bath for 30 min with aroma oil and your favourite song, twice a week would be very beneficial.
To exercise and have a long bath will have more than 1 benefit. Not only will it relax you & make your mind healthy it will help you to sleep, increase blood circulation and it will promote healthy skin, they are all connected to each other!
Another idea is every night when you take your make up off, take a  little extra time to put moisturizer on and massage your face at the same time !
One more thing, chose a healthier diet. When you are busy, we tend to eat easy food, but this is the time you need to eat a lot of various colored vegetables to make you feel beautiful inside & outside.
A last minute diet won’t help you.  Eat health and do some exercise.  A little bit of time for yourself, this will make a huge difference!

Most of all, enjoy the planning & preparation.

Gold Coast Wedding Photos – Wedding Day Photography Hair Tips

Wedding Day Photo tips for HAIR

Lets face it, we all want perfect hair for our wedding day because the photos will last forever.  You don’t want to take a risk on the wrong hair colour for your skin tone or your wedding dress.  The following are some hints about what might help on our very special day.

New hair colour or style

It would seem that it is better to try a new hair colour or hair style more than one week prior to your wedding day in order to avoid a tragic mistake with your hair.
Going and getting your hair coloured for your wedding day is a great idea but remember,
newly coloured hair might oxidise and you can’t be sure what the colour might really be on the day itself, it would certainly be terrible if it did not match your skin tone or dress.

If you make the decision to cut your long hair, it not only changes your hair style, but it could possibly change the feel with your dress, veil and accessories that you have chosen for your big day.  Many women have long hair on their wedding day, and there is plenty of information out there for you to use in relation to hair styles & options .  Consistent advice would be, that if  you have decided to change your hair style, you might want to do so a month or so before the wedding day.

If you have short hair,  you can do a lot with your style with a few little changes.
Changing your hair style with hair accessories gives you many options.

If your hair style is neat and tidy with your veil at the ceremony, at the reception you could put a fresh flower in your hair.
Want impact with a little effort, why don’t you put a long hair wig on and surprise all your guests!

A wedding is only for one day, but the photos  will remain with us for a lifetime and hopefully tell a thousand stories.  Every time you add a little change,  your wedding day photos might tell a different story!!

What does your headshot really say about you ?

Do you have a linkedin, facebook or some type of online profile ?  If you do there’s a good chance that at some point or another you have been asked to upload a profile image of yourself.  Did you leave it blank or did you hurriedly chop yourself out of that picture at that party you went to last year where you thought you looked pretty cool ?

Have you ever really thought about what your profile picture says to people that view it ?  How does it look, is it dark, grainy, out of focus ?  What does the expression on your face say, arrogant, confident, happy, carefree ?  Have you ever asked Gold Coast Photographer other than your partner what they thought of your profile Image.

Research tells us that people are spending less & less time making buying or selection decisions and they are using visuals triggers more frequently to help them make those decisions. 3 seconds is the average amount of time that a potential client takes to make up their mind about your business based on your imagery. Are you sending the right message with your Imagery.

As relationship marketing & personal Branding become the new buzzwords in a world trying to find the next big thing to hang their marketing hat on, your Imagery and more particularly, your profile Image will take on renewed importance.

Is it time to ask yourself the question, What does your Headshot really say about you and or your business ?

Gold Coast Product Photographer

These images are from a shoot I did for Gold Coast Trophies.  The business has recently changed hands and Greg the new owner wanted to spruce up the website a bit.  This means new product shots.  He mentioned that would be about 50 products it was closer to 100.  Thats ok !  It is never easy shooting small products on a white background but I always try and get it as close as possible in camera.  I really do hate editing  myself and then if I have a shocker my re-toucher wants too much !  All of the products were clear or near enough to clear glass, another challenge.  I think in the end the shots came out really nice and i am sure they will look fantastic on the new website.

Gold Coast Photographer for products

This is a few images i did for a new client.  Lilyanne Design sells charms & necklaces and asked me to shoot a whole range of some new products for their website.  They have just moved back to the Gold Coast from the USA and are looking to launch in Australia.  Their website looks fantastic and they are loving their new shots.  Always a challenge to photograph things on a white background, especially when they are this tiny but with a brand new state of the art tripod and a new lighting tent I think I managed to pull it off.

Gold Coast Product & Food Photographer

Most recently I was asked to shoot some Images for a soon to be released Cookbook.   The shots were for a company out of Burleigh Heads, Banaban Coconut Oils.  They import Coconut Oil from Fiji and make a variety of products.  Their marketing director is putting together a cook book and after I had shot their products for their website they asked me if i would spend a day shooting images for their cookbook.  We had an awesome shoot and i really enjoyed the challenge.  The food was awesome and as you could imagine i got to sample a good deal of it as we worked our way through the shoot.  The photography itself was not all that complicated and this shoot was done with natural light coming in from an open window with a silver reflector & sometimes a gold reflector bouncing light back onto the dishes.

The Gold Coast Headshot Guy- Gold Coast Profile Photographer

I have been shooting a lot of Headshots lately & I love it.  Making people look cool & interesting is sometimes a challenge and my Headshot sessions have been designed to relax and energize people and encourage them to deliver some expressions that people looking at their image can warm to. With some people it is really easy.  When someone comes into your studio that is already cool & interesting then its a no brainer that the images are going to turn out great.  Lydia was just that type of person, bright upbeat and she took direction really well.  As a Gold Coast photographer I am always on the look out for new talent and Lydia was not only cool but gorgeous looking as well.

Charity Event Gold Coast

Recently I was given the opportunity to photograph a charity car washing event on the Gold Coast at Southport.  The event was to raise money for the Keiron D’netto Spinal Unit. It was a huge success and had a great time through out the day.  It was a bikini carwash so as you could imagine there were lots of bikini girls running around all over the place.  As a gold coast photographer i feel lucky that i am able to do something that i am passionate about as a job, occasionally it fantastic to have the opportunity to give back and do something for someone else.

Gold Coast Photographer – Events

It is always a pleasure to spend some time with Amgen.  This time they took me to the Q Station in Manly in NSW.  Some amazing history surrounds the area !  It was the Quarrantine Station for incoming passenger and cargo ships back in the 1800′s.  If you were coming in on a ship then it would dock and the sick people would be cordoned off into one part of the Station the people that were not sick would be taken to another part. The sick people would be sent to the hospital etc depending on their condition.  The well people would remain in the station until an agreed amount of time had passed that allowed doctors to determine that they were not bringing in any infectious illnesses.  As a Gold Coast photographer that is surrounded by relatively modern facilities & buildings etc, the opportunity to stay and photograph some slices of history was amazing.

Gold Coast Event Photographers – Amgen

Amgen is a world leader in its field.  It creates drugs for people that are undergoing chemotherapy treatment, to make their lives more bearable.  Each year they have a couple of massive big sales conferences with all of their staff from all over Australia.  Luckily they like my work and so invited me to shoot their conference in Melbourne.  Loved being back in Melbourne after all those years but didn’t have much time for sightseeing as the schedule was jam packed with activities.  As a Professional Gold Coast Photographer I love the opportunities that i get to mix with people from all walks of life.  The guys from Amgen are fantastic to work with and it is always a pleasure to spend some time with them.

Photo Shoot for Inflatable Rash Vest by Bradkay Photographix

Every now & again you see a product and go ” wow”  that’s really cool.  Most people are not aware that the most dangerous sport in Australia is ” fishing”.  Thats right fishing !  More specifically, “Rock Fishing”  There are more people killed and injured rock fishing every year than any other sport in Australia.  This product might change all that.  Its an inflatable rash vest.  Most people would know a rash vest as something that a surfer wears when he is surfing to stop him getting board rash.  This one can be set to automatic so that the second it gets wet, it automatically inflates.  Now i know what you are thinking that it would annoy the hell out of surfers, and you are probably right but think of the uses for boating, rock fishing, kids can wear them around pools etc.  there is also a manual version that you can inflate your self when you need too.  I think this is going revolutionize the water safety industry !

All 4 Me Shoes photo shoot by Bradkay Photographix

I recently was asked to shoot some products shots of some shoes for an online company called ” All for me” .  The shoes are primarily worn by fitness dancers & body builders in the shows etc that they have every few months.  There is a massive range and it was an interesting & tough shoot.  Some of the shoes were very reflective and i had trouble with a particular blue pair.  The reflective nature of the shoe picked any color that I put in front of it.  If you put a shaded or dark cloth in front of it, it darkened the shoe.  If you put a light cloth in front of it, it faded the shoe.  In the end I had to use a combination of both and get creative in photoshop.

Island Beach Resort Gold Coast Accommodation Photo Shoot

This is the Island Beach Resort in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.  There are so many  accommodation websites available nowadays  it must be quite a job trying to keep up with all the ones that are being used by potential visitors to the Gold Coast. Greg from Island beach needed some updated Images and caught my special deal going around on the internet. Up to 3 Rooms + facilities for under $500 is a great deal.  Greg was super happy with the result and i hope they show the resort as it is.

Commercial T-shirt Shoot on the Gold Coast

This was a recent shoot i did for a Company called Jungle Boy.  They have a new t-shirt range that is about to be released.  They wanted a plain background and a groovy sexy model that could pull off a hipster type look.  I found just that girl and the client was thrilled with the look and the model.  There were 9 different shirts all up and we worked our way through them.  Once we got the look that we wanted it was pretty easy to move through the different designs and shoot each one.  We got some wonderful shots and i was really happy with the outcome.  Lydia was awesome and we had a fun shoot.  these are just a couple of the shots.

Photo Shoot for Platinum Nightclub on the Gold Coast – Bradkay Photographix

Coming from a Nightclub background and having known Joey for 15 years its always great to be given the opportunity to shoot Platinum after its been through a refurb.  I love sneaking in there occasionally on a Friday or Saturday night and soaking up some of the atmosphere.  Don’t tell my wife though ! The club always look spectacularly presented and this shoot was no exception.  There is always just the right amount of light & dark areas and i suppose that whys it so popular, getting that balance right is really hard. Clubs need to be light enough to see but dark enough to create atmosphere and allow people to escape into their own worlds. Having some gorgeous podium dancers is a bonus as well !

Gold Coast Fitness Shoot

This is Carina.  She works hard in the gym and had a contest coming up.  She wanted to celebrate her progress by doing a sexy body shoot.  We had shot together before and this shoot I was amazed at the transformation that her body had gone through.  The photos turned out great and i know she loved them because she plastered them all over her facebook page.  I know that she is continuing to work hard at her training and that the next shoot there will probably be another transformation.  here are some of the awesome shots we got.

Sexy Gold Coast Modeling Photography

Natsumi is Japanese and gorgeous !  She needed some shots for her modeling portfolio.  She does quite well on Model Mayhem ( a site for models & photographers to meet and set up shoots) and gets a lot of paid work.  She would like to increase her price for a photographic modeling shoot so she was in need of updating her portfolio.  She came to me because she liked the sexy, dark , mysterious mood that i create with my lighting.

Beautiful Boxes – Product Photography

I love great ideas.  This a great idea !  This was a shoot for a lady that is developing a website for corporate gifts.  These are a selection of boxes that can be made up if you are thinking of sending a gift to a corporate client.  There are a number of them and obviously are or can be tailored to suit the interest of your particular client.  There are a  number of different sizes and prices with a varying amount of contents.

Gold Coast Resort and Holiday Letting Photography

The Chateau Apartments Building in Surfers Paradise have been a landmark on the Surfers Paradise shore front for many years.  I was delighted to be asked by management to shoot the building.  It was only a mini shoot as they needed to update some of their apartment shots.  The views are amazing and there is nothing quite comparable to staying right in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

Magazine Photo Shoot for Europe

I love it when i get overseas enquiries.  This shoot was a little different in that i was asked to shoot for a retirement magazine.  The magazine is Dutch and it is centered around activities etc of retirees.  They asked me to shoot with a couple that had retired to the Southern end of the Gold Coast some 10 years ago.  They wanted to capture some of the things that the couple do and where they live.  Their English was good enough for me to understand that he is a retired builder that spends his time fishing and that she is busy working as a volunteer nurse.  They were a fabulous couple  but a bit perplexed as to how they were chosen to do the photo shoot.

Commercial Real Estate Photography – Gold Coast

I have found myself getting more & more commercial Real Estate Photography work.  I am told that there are not alot of photographers on the Gold Coast that do it well.  Creating a niche for myself in this area in the coming months is a challenge I have set myself. There are many new photographers coming into the market everyday so the challenge is to set yourself apart in a few areas, the first obviously is quality of work, the 2nd I believe is what you shoot.  Finding things that other photographers are not shooting and becoming the “Go to ” photographer in that niche what I am trying to do.  This is a shoot for PRD Burleigh Heads.

Ultraderm – Product Shoot

I love shooting products & have been getting alot of requests lately.  Each product is new & different and they can really test your skill as a photographer.  Product distributors are realizing that its important to have really smick looking images and that it is often the only thing that sets you apart from the others.  When you are marketing your product in places like E-bay etc professional quality images really stand out.  Likewise, non-professional quality images really stand out.  More & more of my work is about making a product look the best it can possibly look.  This Ultraderm shoot was no different.  I loved using the shiny black reflective surface.

The question most often asked to a Professional Photographer !

I don’t know about other professional Photographers but it seems to me that the most often asked question i get is NOT, how much do you charge but “what type of camera would you recommend I buy”.  It is actually a bit of a ” How long is a piece of string ” type question with a multitude of answers.  I thought I would try and address some of the responses to that question here !

Firstly, I would usually respond to that question with 3 questions of my own, what type of photography do you do, where do the images end up and what is your budget.

Let me deal with what type of photography do you do.  I use Nikon, so let me get that out there ” straight off the bat “.  I use Nikon for no fantastic reason other than the first really decent camera i bought 30 years ago was a Nikon and all the lenses i bought since that time fit onto the various Nikon camera bodies that i have.   I am not against Canon its just that i see no reason to switch and have to buy a whole new kit of lenses.

I am a full time freelance Photographer in that, it is all i do to pay the rent each week and feed my family.  I use a Nikon D7000 ! Why do I use this particular camera, because it does everything i need it to do and it fits into my budget.  For all you equipment snobs out there, It is NOT the most expensive Nikon Camera on the market and it does NOT have the most Megapixels of any camera on the market. I shoot mostly Commercial Headshots, buildings, products & Weddings.  In most of these situations I have good control over the light and I have a good understanding of where the Images will be used. Why is this important, because in my business, right now anything more expensive with more mega pixels is just not needed.  That’s not to say that that won’t change in the future but that’s how it is right now.

What will you use your new camera for ?  If you tell me that you are going to turn Pro well then i would be asking what type 0f Images are you going to shoot.  If you said that you will be shooting commercial billboard advertising then i would probably suggest you get a full frame, 35 megapixel Nikon d4 or something of that ilk for about $8000.00 because if the Images are going to end up on billboards then you will need something with lots of megapixels so the images can be enlarged.  If you said that you will be shooting kids portraits in a studio then you could get a D7000 or something with a few less bells & whistles for a few less $$$$$.   If you tell me that you just want to be able to take really nice pictures of your kids for use on social media then you could get  any one of the point & shoot cameras on the market that range from $150.00 – $1000.00  In fact if you have an Iphone or anyone of the smartphone cameras out there, you have an amazing camera already.

If you want to get a bit more creative and step up to DSLR( DIGITAL SINGLE LENS REFLEX ) then be prepared to carry around lots of stuff.  I carry the very minimum I can to each shoot but I still carry a bag with 2 bodies, 2 flashes, 3 lenses, close up lens set, 4 sets of batteries, a tripod, a light stand & a laptop.  Now, you probably won’t want all that gear just to shoot photos of the kids playing at the park or the beach but a DSLR where you can change lenses are heavy, and the lenses for them are heavy so you will need a bag, that is heavy and if you want to use them to their full capacity which means in low light and those types of situations then you will need a tripod, which are also heavy !

You can see where this is going, I’m not that into the equipment side of things so I use what I need to get the job done and i believe the best camera is the one that you have with you.  The camera is just a tool you use to take great images.  If you see a really nice house, does anybody care what type of hammer the builder used ( maybe I’m showing my age, should i change hammer for nail gun ?) Does anybody care what type of brushes a painter used if he has painted an amazing picture ?

Affordability !  If you have $10,000 to spend on a top of the range Professional camera, I’m jealous.  If you buy one to take photos of the kids at the beach, its like buying a Ferrari to go food shopping in on a Saturday afternoon.    DSLR Prosumer cameras can range from $800.00 up to $2500 and there are so many choices.

I would suggest buying a decent camera for about $1000.00 and then investing the rest in a really good course of training.  Buying a camera for $2500 and then not knowing how to balance shutter speed, aperture, ISO or white balance is a waste, like buying a Ferrari that goes at 320klms per hour but driving in a 60 klm per hour zone.

After you tackle the digital Camera question you then have to think about computers & computer software. Top of the range cameras that take 35 megapixel images take up lots of space on your hard drive and you need lots of processing speed just to be able to view the images. More food for thought  and a whole new discussion for another day.

Your Headshot or Profile Image, how to make yours look better.

Its no secret that Famous Actors & actresses generally look pretty good in their photos.  Although the amount of photoshopping that goes on these days has received a fair bit of criticism lately and its good to see in some situations it is coming back to a more normal form, having an interesting or good image of yourself is not all about photoshop.  Stars on the red carpet get very little assistance from lights and/or photoshop but they still manage to look good. Practice makes perfect and these guys are always having their photograph taken and they have to look good, its their job !

A quick look at facebook, linkedin or the internet in general, tells me that the everyday person is having their photograph taken more & more.  This shouldn’t surprise anyone because nowadays 99.9% of the population carry a camera in their pocket.

How do we then start to look better in snaps that we are in everyday.  These are a few tips, that if you can remember will help you not only look better in day to day snaps but will also help on your wedding day, in any corporate profile images and might stop you cringing when your mates post images of you on their Facebook feeds.

1.  Most people have a tendency to pull back from the camera, this gives you a slightly elevated position and can highlight your neck, not a good look generally. I suggest you lean towards the camera, bringing your forehead closer to the camera !

2. If the person taking your picture is smaller than you, drop your knees a little so that the camera is at or slightly above eye level, this will hide any extra stuff you might have going on under your chin.

3. Unless you have no teeth whatsoever I would usually suggest you smile. Practice being able to smile on cue.  I find a lot of girls particularly want to pull off that sultry, sexy look that models do.  Models can do it because they practice it everyday and have that ” look”.  Lets face it, if we looked like that we would all be models. Natural smiles are always best.

4. Slightly turn one shoulder towards the camera, either side is ok but the trick is to lean towards the shoulder closest to the camera.  Turning one shoulder towards the camera can make us look slightly thinner and leaning towards that side will again take away any chins by stretching the skin under the neck and giving a stronger jawline.

Following these few tips won’t make you look like Brad Pitt or Nicole Kidman but they can help you to stop cringing when you see photos of yourself on facebook or social media feeds.

Your Headshot & Profile Image, what does yours say ?

Most people at some stage or another have been asked to upload a profile Image or Headshot into some type of online profile.  Did you spend any time thinking about the image ?  What does that image say about you and your business ?  What does the expression on your face say, happy, approachable, serious, trustworthy, confident, arrogant ?  What do people think about when they see my profile image ?

Do people care about your profile Image ?  I grew up with the words, ” you have to make a good first impression and you only get one chance “   What type of first impression does your profile picture make ?  Does it make the impression that you want it too ?

There are marketing people  that say you must have a profile Image on your website, staff photos if you will.  I can’t find it written anywhere that says your staff photos have to look like drivers license photos or passport photos.

There are some very simple tips & tricks that can make your Headshots look better.

Next week i will give you some techniques in standing and some expressions that can make you look as good as you can possibly look.

Headshots – What are they & who needs them?

Wikipedia defines a headshot ” as a modern portrait for todays branding needs, where the focus of the photograph is the personality inside the person captured ” Pretty nice description and I didn’t think I could improve on it so I put it here !

Traditionally headshots were the realm of Actors & Actresses that were looking for work.  Whereas the business man would carry a business card, an actor would carry a composite card or 8 x 10 headshot.  Why the headshot ?  I think because of the proximity and the fact that you can’t hide in a headshot.  Its up close and its you.  Full body shots on location for example, the person can hide a little and get lost in the fact that it might be a great view or beautiful sunset and the overall image might be excellent.  In  Headshots there is no hiding!

Why are Headshots becoming so important for everybody lately?

The ability to market your business or product online has probably overtaken most other necessary skills.  Less and less do you meet business people that don’t have some form of presence online, whether its a major company or someone selling something from his garage.  The ability to be able to connect with people online and to have people trust you is sooooo important.  I believe that having a Headshot or profile Image on your website or on your linkedin page are paramount to people being able to connect with you and understand that they are dealing with a real person and not just an automatic website.

If a customer can see you, the real you, then I think you move a step closer to forming a relationship with that person and hence it then becomes much easier to engage with them.

It is said that people take about 7 seconds to make up their mind about you based on your profile image.  What does your profile image say about you and or your business ?

Look for next weeks Headshot installment from the Gold Coast Headshot Guy !

The Gold Coast Headshot Guy

This is Dean.  He is an electrician.  Dean is a member of my BNI Network referral group.  I told Dean there is no reason why he can’t look like a Rockstar in his corporate Portraits.  I love trying to make people look cool in their headshots.  I think he looks pretty good.  There is nothing that says that your corporate portraits have to look like passport or Drivers license photos.  You be the judge !

Gold Coast Corporate Headshots

This is Rod.  He is a real Estate Agent here on the Gold Coast.  he wanted a shot that made him look the part.  I believe that there is nothing anywhere that says guys and girls can’t look cool in their corporate portraits or Headshots.  I am trying to blur the lines between a corporate portrait and something that a model or an actor might use in their portfolios.

These are some shots I did for a company called Luna Blu.  They market a range of bags, accessories, sarongs etc.  They wanted a beach theme and what better place to do the shoot than on the Gold Coast.  We met the models early at Palm beach and started to work through the shots we wanted.  Its was a great fun shoot and we got some great images.  I hope you like them.

Fun & Groovy Headshots

This is Alicia. She needed some new Headshots for her new role with Aussie Home Loans.  She was so bright and bubbly and an absolute delight to photograph.  We had so much fun swapping jokes that it was sometimes hard to get some serious shots for her portfolio.  I think we did alright in the end and she got some great shots.  She loved my cinema-scope format and has a few others from Aussie Home loans to send my way.

Gold Coast Actor & Modeling Photographer

This is Korey.  He asked me to shoot some groovy Headshots & portfolio shots for him.  We spent some time in his gym, his yard and then in his garage with his Harley.  After the location shoot we went to my studio for some rock star style Headshots in true cinema-scope format.  He is a pretty cool guy and I am sure we will see his name up in lights very soon.  He has had a pretty interesting life & apart from playing pro football having survived battles with his health he is now a actor/model & personal Trainer.

Corporate Profile Images & Headshots

This is Mark.  He was the highest ranked Australian on the World Superbike Motorcycle Racing Tour last year.  Pretty cool !  I love motorcycle racing so I was pretty excited when Mark was keen to shoot in my studio.  He loved my new cinema-scope style of shooting and was keen to have some of those for his marketing.  He liked the fact that they are a little different.  Along with racing this year he is moving into to the corporate motivational speaking circuit.  I have no doubt that he will do well and look forward to watching him rip around the circuit again this year.

Headshot & Marketing Images

This is Mitchell.  He’s a cool & funky guitarist that needed some shots for his marketing.  He is doing some posters, facebook , linked in stuff.  He had seen my headshots on someone else’s facebook page and indicated  he liked the cinema-scope style that I have been developing rather than a more traditional passport style of headshot.  After we were done with the studio we snuck outside into the late afternoon sun and were able to get some funky looking shots of him with his guitar.

Acting & Modeling Portfolio Photographer

This is Simone.  She is an aspiring actress and asked me to shoot some  Headshots & Portfolio shots for her.  Simone indicated that although she is an actress she wanted a range of images more akin to a modeling portfolio.  I was happy to oblige.  We started in the studio with the Headshots and we both really enjoyed the transformation as I coached her through the various body & head positions that suited her face.  After the studio we ventured outside where in the late afternoon we had some really soft light and we able to capture some really nice relaxed images.

Commercial Building Photography – Gold Coast

Palm Meadows Golf Course has been a long standing institution on the Gold Coast.  It surely one of the well known Golf Courses in Australia.  I jumper at the recent chance to shoot the Function center recently.  It was great shoot right up to the time that I needed to shoot from outside just on dusk.  The rain came down at exactly the wrong time.  Ad I was shooting I had a large picnic rug thrown over myself and the camera & I was doing little sprints from shot to the next.  Anybody watching must have thought i was mental.  I did contemplate at one stage returning on another day but thought I would hang in there and see what i got.  i was pretty happy with the results, more importantly, so was my client.  One of the few things you can’t change about being a Gold Coast Photographer is the weather but you can still never use it as an excuse for not getting a shot !

Product Photography Gold Coast

I love bean bags !  I have one at home & in my office.  Any chance I get to leave my desk and sit on the bean bag I take it.  It’s often not very productive because it’s far too comfortable.  When I was asked to do this shoot for  ” bean bags r us ” I was delighted.  Their range of colors shapes & sizes was amazing and i made sure I tested them all out.

As a Gold Coast Product Photographers its not all that often that I get to shoot a product that I am passionate about so I was very happy to be available & selected to do this photo shoot.
